CRISTIANI IN IRAQ: MAZURKIEWICZ (COMECE), “UE PUÒ FARE MOLTO PER IL MEDIO ORIENTE”

(Strasburgo) “I cristiani sono perseguitati in varie parti del mondo, ma non sempre c’è consapevolezza di questa realtà. I recenti attentati in Iraq hanno purtroppo confermato che si tratta di un problema grave e reale”: padre Piotr Mazurkiewicz, segretario generale della Comece (Commissione degli episcopati della Comunità europea), commenta per il Sir il viaggio di alcuni vescovi iracheni al Parlamento Ue, cui ha personalmente partecipato. “All’Europarlamento abbiamo notato una grande simpatia ed estrema attenzione verso le testimonianze portate dai vescovi. E possiamo dire che la risoluzione recentemente approvata sulle persecuzioni dei cristiani e sulla libertà religiosa segnala un’attenzione nuova” nelle istituzioni comunitarie. Mazurkiewicz aggiunge: “Ora occorre domandarsi cosa può fare l’Unione europea per la pace, la sicurezza e la difesa dei diritti per i cristiani in Medio oriente. Il che equivale ad occuparsi della tutela di tali valori per tutte” le popolazioni mediorientali. “In Iraq – aggiunge il segretario Comece – la pace può essere costruita anche con l’aiuto dell’Europa. Ad esempio nei negoziati in corso per l’accordo Ue-Iraq c’è l’opportunità effettiva di non pensare solo agli affari, ma di far valere i diritti e il rispetto per le persone”.

(Strasbourg) - ”Christians are persecuted in many parts of the world, but people are not always aware of this. The recent terrorist attacks in Iraq have unfortunately confirmed that it is a serious, real problem”: father Piotr Mazurkiewicz, secretary general of Comece (Commission of the EU’s Bishops Conferences), comments with SIR on the visit made by some Iraqi bishops to the EU Parliament, that he personally took part in. “At the European Parliament, we noticed great sympathy with and extreme attention to the experiences told by the bishops. Mazurkiewicz adds: “Now, we have to ask ourselves what the European Union can do for peace, security and the defence of human rights for the Christians of the Middle East. Which means taking care of protecting such values for all of “the Middle Eastern populations. “In Iraq – the secretary of Comece adds –, peace can also be built with the help of Europe.
