IN MEDIO ORIENTE CI SARÀ SEMPRE POSTO PER I CRISTIANI PDF Stampa E-mail

“In the future of the Middle East, there will always be a place for Christianity”. This was stressed by His Beatitude Antonios Naguib, 6th Patriarch of Alexandria of the Coptic Catholic Church, during a meeting with a delegation of the Agora of the Youth of the Mediterranean, headed by father Francesco Pierpaoli of Centro Giovanni Paolo II of Loreto, who is in Egypt these days for a visit to the local Christian communities. “These are no easy times for us – the Patriarch admitted – but I think the situation of minorities is the same everywhere. We have seen worse times and I think we will always belong to this land in which we are rooted. We must not look at the future with pessimism”. However, according to Naguib, fanaticism must be faced “through cooperation policies, promoted by the EU itself, dialogue and mutual understanding, beginning with young people with such projects as this one of the Agora”. The forthcoming Episcopal Synod for the Middle East, due to take place in October, concluded the Patriarch of Alexandria, “will give a new lease of life to the Churches of the region, without neglecting the roots of out heritage, and above all it will revive all the aspects of dialogue, as much between the local Catholic Churches as with the Orthodox Churches and Islam. However, we will have to carefully define the social and religious contexts of every Middle Eastern country”.
