“What has been going on in Syria for weeks is a plot hatched by some external force. An attempt of clear neo-colonialism. Syria certainly has its problems, it would be stupid to deny that, but could they not be faced by the Government through fair reforms and by the population through orderly rallies, without violence? What State does not need reforms?” This is a passage from an interview by SIR with the Syro-Catholic archbishop of Damascus, mgr. Elias Tabe, who comments the words spoken by Benedict XVI yesterday at the Regina Cæli about the tragic situation in Syria.
“Yesterday, we were gathering in assembly in Damascus, as the guests of the Greek Catholic Patriarchate of mgr. Gregorio III Laham, and the apostolic nuncio, mgr. Mario Zenari, read us the text of the Pope’s appeal, also listened to by many foreign diplomats accredited to Syria, including the Italian ambassador, and by high representatives of the Syrian Government. We received the Holy Father’s words with great satisfaction and hope. His was a gesture of greet solidarity with Syria”. According to mgr. Tabe, a plot is being hatched in Syria by “Islamic fundamentalists, even Wahabites from Saudi Arabia, from Qatar. Salafite infiltration may happen in Syria too, as it did in Egypt”. Finding cohabitation and unity again is possible, the archbishop explains; “one should legitimately expect the Government and the population to be cooperative, leaving aside all forms of violence. From this point of view, hope must never fail us when we pursue the common good, as the Holy Father reminds us with his words”.
