EUROPEAN CHURCHES: ECOLOGICAL PILGRIMAGE ON THE DANUBE, FROM WASTE OIL TO BIO-DIESEL
(Hungary) One hundred and thirty kilometres on the Danube, from Esztergom, Hungary, to Bratislava, Slovakia. The bishops and delegates of the Commissions of the European Bishops Conferences in charge of environmental issues, who are now taking part in the “ecological” pilgrimage organised by Ccee (Council of European Bishops Conferences), reached the second stop of their pilgrimage today as they continued their reflections on environmental issues.
During their 130 kilometres’ sailing on the Danube, the pilgrims stopped in Komàrom (Hungary) to visit the local bio-diesel factory, which produces bio-diesel from waste cooking oils and rapeseed oil. “In Europe – Rudi Ruth, president of the company, explained – every year we collect 60 to 70 thousand tons of waste cooking oil which would otherwise be thrown away”. From these materials, which are collected by specialist companies, they produce “a fuel which contains no toxic substances at all”.
