The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I will go on an official visit to Russia in late May, on the invitation of the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Patriarch of Moscow Kirill I. It was announced yesterday at a press conference by Archbishop Hilarion (Alféïev), director of external relations at the Patriarchate of Moscow. The visit is an epoch-making event: Patriarch Bartholomew went to Moscow on December 9th 2008 to officiate the funerals of Patriarch Alexius II.
"This time – highlighted Hilarion –, this is the Patriarch of Constantinople’s official visit to the Russian Orthodox Church, the first one after so many years". The delegate of the Patriarchate of Moscow also points out that this visit was made possible by the fact that in 2009 “there was a substantial improvement in our relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople", “aware – he said – of the need to have better, closer cooperation between the Orthodox Churches”, as also shown during Patriarch Kirill’s visit to the premises of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Istanbul in July 2009. Then, answering a journalist’s question on a potential agreement between the two Patriarchates as to the ecclesial situation in Ukraine, where the Orthodox are split into three parallel jurisdictions, Archbishop Hilarion answered that there is “no agreement” for the time being. "But both parties can clearly see – added Hilarion – that the favourable process that began in 2009 means that none of the patriarchates will do anything against the canonical territory of the other, and vice versa".
