TURKEY: I.HALEVE (CHIEF RABBI), “A FURTHER STEP” TOWARDS THE EU

(From our correspondents in Munich) “A further step towards Europe”: Isak Haleve, Chief Rabbi of Turkey, described in these terms in an interview with SIR the law announced by the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and published on the Official Journal on 27 August, about the return of the properties confiscated from religious Foundations by the Turkish Government after 1936. This law, however, only applies to minority communities (Greek, Armenian, Jewish) that have their properties registered in the name of Foundations. Such communities – of Turkish nationality – have a legal status through their Foundations.
