Kurian Joseph Vellamattam, Kanjirapally,
Sunday of Hosannas in the Church of the East.
Direttore: Mons. Pierre Yousif
The present study is an attempt to examine the theological and spiritual content of the Feast of Hosannas and to demonstrate its liturgical importance in the tradition of the Church of the East. The primary source of this study is the Breviarium (Breviarium juxta ritum syrorum orientalium id est Chaldaeorum, 3 vols., Paris 1886-1887), the Catholic edition of the Chaldean Breviary in Syriac by Paul Bedjan and George Abdišo Khayyath, compiled into a single work by Pierre Yousif and reprinted by the Congregation for the Eastern Churches in 2002. As a supportive and supplementary source, the three-volume liturgical prayers known as the Hudra, published by the Assyrian Church of the East (Thomas Darmo, ed., Ktaba da-Qdam wa-d-Batar wa-d-Hudra wa-d-Kaškull wa-d-Gazza, 3 vols., Trichur 1960-1961), is used.
Given the set scope of a theological and liturgical study, an analytical and synthetical method has been applied. The famous axiom, lex orandi-lex credendi, which accepts the essential rote of liturgical prayers in the interpretation of the Christian faith, functions as the theological principle behind ihis study.
The present study is designed in seven chapters. The introductory chapter briefly presents the biblical origin and development of the Feast of Palm Sunday and its adaptation in the Church of the East. The second chapter gives an English translation of the Propers of this feast based on the Syriac text provided by Breviarium along with a textual comparison with the Assyrian edition. The following three chapters present an analysis of the liturgical rites and prayers of the feast. Hence, the third chapter explains the ramšā celebration of Palm Sunday, and the fourth chapter contains the study of lelyā-saprā. In the fifth chapter, the Propers of the Eucharistic liturgy of Palm Sunday are explained. The last two chapters are devoted to a synthesis on the basis of the discoveries and observations made during the ana-lytical study. Hence, the sixth chapter furnishes a synthesis of the main theologycal themes of this feast, and the final chapter highlights some of the special features concerning the East Syrian Palm Sunday liturgy. The great resemblance between the liturgical texts present in both editions, except for minor variations, points to the fact that the manuscripts do not differ in structure and content. From a theological point of view, the liturgy of the Feast of Palm Sunday is significant for the Christological and ecclesiological themes it contains. The Sunday of Hosannas is the feast of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the liturgical prayers profusely illustrate the person and mission of Christ. So also, the Church's origin, identity and purpose are well depicted in today's celebrations.
